SARAH WINCHESTER MADE ME HARDCORE
ABSTRACT

Alex Hetherington is currently researching the nature, psychology, construction, philosophy and consequences of lying. The work will include the construction of personality, identity and personal truth and will explore cultural forms that employ fakery, sham, scams and deliberate misinformation. This research will lead to exploration of these themes both online and through performance. Sarah Winchester Made Me Hardcore (2009) is the first project to emerge from this period of research and commingles the story of his mother's continuing decent into schizophrenia with the story of US millionaire armoury heiress Sarah Winchester and her building program that saw her continue to construct her house for 38 years, 24 hours a day. The work is accompanied by a performance project that re-enacts email scams in an exploration of narrative, myth, madness, truth and fiction. This performance was performed at the CCA, Glasgow, November 2008, with a specially constructed group of performers, with footage shot at the Winchester Mansion in San Jose, California, January 2009. The work further invests in lying and fiction by assigning roles from the perpetrators or protagonists from email scams as well as real life characters embroiled in scandals surrounding lies, plagiarism and falsehood for monetary gain. The work also references and re-enacts Catherine Sullivan's film work, A Triangle of Need (2008).
